Every Community. Every Tribe. Visible.
A statewide initiative to paint a mural honoring each of California’s 109 federally recognized Native tribes — and the “+” for the unrecognized and urban Native peoples whose identity was never something paperwork could grant or take away.
Woven Together
When community members pass by their mural, they won't just see art on a wall — they will see themselves in it, and know that their hands helped weave it into existence.
We are facilitators, not sole authors. Like traditional basketry, this work begins together: the community weaves the foundation, and we bring it to a finish.
The Return
Every mural is signed — not with David's name, but with its title, “The Return,” translated into the local language where a translation is known. For example, in Araráhih, the language of the Karuk people, Ípak carries the meaning of return. The name marks what the mural is: the return of people, of community, of knowledge to a place.
109+ grows through relationship, not requests. If you're part of a tribal community, urban Native organization, or "+" community interested in exploring a mural, reach out — we'll talk through what that process looks like together.
